The Malco S5R is a 5″ hand seamer with die-cast zinc jaws, built for siding, gutter and trim installers who bend painted aluminum flashing, coil stock and fascia and want to avoid marking the finish. The zinc jaws are softer than forged steel, so they are kinder to paint and coatings.
The jaws are slightly bowed so they bear evenly along their length, and the bending depth goes to 2″ with marks every 1/4″. Compound leverage of about 7:1 gives a firm hold. Malco rates it for .029″ aluminum and states it is not for use on steel; it also is not meant as a striking or prying tool. RedLine handles and nickel plating match the rest of Malco’s seamer line.
For steel, copper or heavier work, use a forged-jaw Malco seamer instead: the 3″ S2R, the offset S3R, or the 6″ S6R for wide bends. The Malco Straight Gripped Seamer Tongs (SG10) are another option for painted metal, with vinyl-covered cast steel jaws. This seamer pairs with Aluminum Coil and a Van Mark brake for trim work.
Malco covers it under its Limited Lifetime Warranty. Note that the catalog also lists this same tool under its full Malco name.

Can I use it on steel?
No. Malco rates it for aluminum up to .029" and says it is not for steel. Use the forged-jaw S2R, S3R or S6R for steel.
Will it mark painted coil?
The zinc jaws are designed to be gentle on painted and coated metal, which is the main reason to choose this seamer.
