About this product
Copper coil is sheet copper on a roll, used by roofers, sheet metal shops and gutter installers for standing seam and flat-seam roofs, valleys, step and counter flashing, gutters, downspouts and custom trim on slate, tile and historic buildings.
We list it in 16 oz and 20 oz weights and in 18″, 24″ and 36″ widths. The ounce figure is the weight of one square foot: per Revere Copper and the Copper Development Association, 16 oz copper is about .0216″ thick and 20 oz about .0270″. The CDA treats 16 oz as the usual minimum for flashings and uses 20 oz under slate or tile and for flat-seam roofing. Lead-coated copper is listed separately in 18″ and 20″ widths; it is covered by ASTM B101 for roofing, flashing, gutters and downspouts, and gives a gray look instead of the brown-to-green patina of bare copper.
Copper folds easily with hand tools: a Malco or WUKO hand seamer handles hems and short flanges, and a Van Mark brake takes care of long bends. Keep copper from touching Galvalume steel or aluminum, since the contact causes corrosion, and fasten it with copper or other compatible fasteners. If you need flat stock rather than coil, Copper Sheet comes 36″ wide in the same weights.
Copper orders often include closed-cell backer rod and sealant for joints, plus the hand seamers and snips from this catalog.
