Metal Slitters

Gang slitters cut a wide coil into several narrower strips in one pass. A guillotine shear cuts sheet straight across. These are shop machines for crews that process their own coil.

Machines in this section

  • Industrial gang metal slitters. Several knives on two arbors cut a wide coil into strips at once. Set the knife spacing for the widths you need, such as trim stock or panel coil.
  • HS-52 industrial manual guillotine shear. A hand-operated shear for straight cuts across sheet and cut lengths of coil.

For cutting trim coil at the brake, see the Van Mark Trim-A-Slitter on the siding and trim brakes page.

Slit your own coil or buy it slit?

Slitting in-house makes sense when you use many widths every week and have space for a decoiler, the slitter and a recoiler. If you only need a few widths now and then, it is usually simpler to buy coil already slit. Ask about our coil slitting service for that.

Buying advice

  • Edge quality. Sharp, well-set knives leave a clean edge with little burr. Painted coil shows a poor edge right away.
  • Capacity. Check the widest coil and the heaviest gauge the slitter takes, for each metal.
  • Feed and take-up. A slitter needs a decoiler in front and somewhere for the strips to go.
  • Protect the paint. Keep rollers clean and use protective film where your coil has it.
  • Spare knives. Keep a spare set so a dull knife doesn’t stop the shop.

Questions

What is the difference between a slitter and a shear?

A slitter cuts along the length of the coil to make narrower strips. A shear cuts across the sheet or coil to make set lengths.

Can a gang slitter handle painted coil?

Yes, when the knives are sharp and the rollers are clean. Run a short test piece and check the edge before a full run.

Do I need a recoiler?

If you slit strips to use later, a recoiler winds them into small coils. If you feed a machine directly, you may not need one.

Can I see a slitter before I buy?
