Where each one goes
Butyl tape
Use it wherever two pieces of metal overlap and get fastened: end laps, under ridge and eave trim, and at closures. It stays flexible and seals as the fasteners pull the laps tight.
Gun-grade sealant
Use it at joints you can see and reach: trim terminations, counterflashing, and around penetrations. Tubes suit small jobs. Sausage packs mean less waste on bigger jobs.
Backer rod
Push backer rod into wide joints so sealant bonds to two sides only. Under flat aluminum pans, closed-cell backer rod also helps reduce oil canning.
Tips
- Clean and dry the metal first. Sealant won’t hold on oil, dust or frost.
- Check that the sealant is compatible with the paint system on your coil.
- Don’t caulk over a bad lap. Fix the lap.
- Store butyl and sealant out of the cold before use. Both work better at room temperature.
Questions
Butyl tape or caulk for end laps?
Butyl tape. It goes inside the lap where it can’t be seen or weathered. Caulk is for exposed joints.

How much butyl tape do I need?
Measure every lap and trim run that needs it and add a little for waste. The trim and accessory estimator helps with the list.
Is backer rod enough to stop oil canning?
It helps, but flat panels can still show waviness. Stiffening ribs, a flat deck and a heavier gauge also matter.
