Shop drawings show exactly what material goes where on a metal roof and how it is attached. Architects and engineers ask for them before they approve a commercial or custom residential job.
Confirm before you order drawings. Scope, turnaround and any fee for shop drawings are confirmed by phone for each project. Call (732) 561-4275.
What a set usually includes
- A roof plan with the panel layout and every panel length.
- Trim and flashing profiles with dimensions and girth.
- The clip and fastener layout, following the panel maker’s requirements.
- Details at eaves, rakes, ridges, hips, valleys, walls and penetrations.
- A materials list that matches the drawings.
- Notes on the metal, gauge and finish for each area of the roof.
Why they matter
- Approval. On many projects you can’t order metal until the drawings are approved.
- Fewer surprises. Problems show up on paper, not on the roof.
- Accurate orders. Panel lengths and trim come straight from the drawings.
- A clear plan for the crew. Installers know what goes where without guessing.
- A record. Approved drawings show what was agreed if questions come up later.
How the process works
- Send the contract documents. Architectural drawings, specs and any details the architect has drawn.
- Drawings are prepared. The layout follows the panel profile you’re using.
- You submit them. The architect or engineer of record reviews them.
- Revisions. Comments come back, the drawings are revised and resubmitted.
- Approval, then order. Approved drawings become the order for coil, panels and trim.
Start early
Ask for shop drawings as soon as you have the contract. Reviews and revisions take time, and the metal order usually waits for approval. Starting early keeps the job on schedule.
What to send
Contract drawings and specs as PDFs, the panel profile and gauge, the color, and the approval deadline. Attach them to the quote form or email info@northeastmetalsupplies.com.
Questions
Are shop drawings the same as engineering?
No. Shop drawings show how the roof is laid out and installed. Structural calculations, where a project needs them, come from an engineer.
Can you work from a CAD file?
Ask us which file types we can use for your project. PDFs work for review.
Is there a charge?
Ask us when you call. Any charge is agreed before work starts.
Can you estimate the materials from the drawings?
Yes, ask for a takeoff at the same time. See material estimating.
