About this product

DuPont Tyvek Protec 120 is a synthetic roof underlayment that roofers fasten over the deck as the water-shedding layer under shingles or metal panels. It takes the place of felt on residential and light commercial roofs, and its embossed, grooved top surface is designed to give crews footing whether the sheet is wet, dry, hot or dusty.

DuPont builds it in four layers: the textured top, a laminated layer that serves as the water barrier, a woven polypropylene scrim for strength, and a grippy underside that helps it stay put on the deck while you work. A full roll is 48″ x 250′, ten squares, and the sheet is just under 10 mils thick. It carries a Class A fire rating under ASTM E108 and is listed for slopes of 2:12 and steeper. With a vapor permeance below 0.05 perms it behaves as a vapor barrier, so the roof needs proper ventilation. DuPont’s product sheet calls for cap nails or cap staples, spaced closer along the laps than through the middle of the sheet.

Protec 120 is the lightest sheet in the Protec line; DuPont points tile and slate jobs to the heavier Protec 160 or 200. For a self-adhered ice barrier at eaves and valleys, pair it with Tyvek Protec PSU. Other underlayments in this catalog include Lastobond Pro HT-N and Resistor SF.

DuPont backs Protec 120 with a 30-Year Limited Warranty for builders and professional installers on product purchased and installed after January 1, 2024.

Questions

Can I use it under a metal roof?

Yes. DuPont lists asphalt shingle, cedar shingle and metal roofs. For tile and slate it recommends Protec 160 or 200.

How is it fastened?

DuPont calls for cap nails or cap staples, closer together along the laps than through the field. Follow the current DuPont installation guide for spacing.

Does it work as an ice barrier?

Protec 120 is not listed as an ice barrier. At eaves and valleys use a self-adhered membrane such as Tyvek Protec PSU, which carries an ICC-ES ice-barrier listing.
