About this product

The StanGroup D47 is the larger of StanGroup’s two hand spinning lathes, built for shops that need to spin wide parts such as big domes, cones and discs up to about four feet across. Like the D31, it is a manual machine: the operator works the turning blank down over a mandrel with lever-type spinning tools.

Maximum blank diameter is 47″ (1200 mm). StanGroup lists aluminum, brass, copper, silver, steel and stainless steel, with thickness up to 0.1″ (2.5 mm, roughly 13 ga) in low-carbon steel. The frame is heavy cast iron, and the spindle is driven through a two-speed belt by a motor that StanGroup rates at 5 to 5.5 kW. The default spindle thread is 2.25″ x 4 TPI right-hand, and the tailstock is shaped so blanks go on and finished parts come off the mandrel quickly. The machine weighs about 2,600 lb (1180 kg).

StanGroup offers the same scissors-type roller tool as for the D31: two hardened Cr12MoV rollers (60+ HRC), 4.725″ in diameter, one with a 0.06″ and one with a 0.24″ working radius, each running on two tapered roller bearings, mounted on 3 ft handles with a 4 ft roller holder. Plain and crank tools work too. Mandrels may be hardwood, plywood or steel. Soap works as a lubricant for aluminum; wax or oil can be used too, and roller tools can run dry. A live center and a back-plate thread adapter are optional.

For smaller work, the Manual metal spinning lathe D31 takes blanks up to 31″; for programmed production, see the D800 CNC Metal spinning lathe. Cut blanks from Aluminum Sheet, Copper Sheet or Steel Sheet.
