About this product
The StanGroup D31 is a hand-operated metal spinning lathe for shops that form round parts from flat blanks, such as cones, domes and other rotational shapes, in short runs or as prototypes. The operator presses the turning blank over a mandrel with a long lever tool, so round parts can be made without a press die.
It takes blanks up to 31″ (800 mm) across. StanGroup lists aluminum, brass, copper, silver, steel and stainless steel, with a limit of 0.1″ (2.5 mm, about 13 ga) in low-carbon steel. The heavy base frame is cast iron, and a 3 kW motor drives the spindle through a two-speed belt. The tailstock is designed so a blank can be mounted and a finished piece taken off the mandrel quickly. The spindle nose has a default 2.25″ x 4 TPI right-hand thread. The machine weighs about 1,500 lb (680 kg), and its packing size is 24″ x 72″ x 48″ high.
Both simple and crank-type spinning tools can be used. StanGroup offers a scissors-style tool with two rollers made from Cr12MoV tool steel hardened to 60+ HRC, each riding on two tapered roller bearings. The rollers are 4.725″ in diameter with 0.06″ and 0.24″ working radii, on 3 ft handles with a 4 ft roller holder. Mandrels can be hardwood, plywood or steel depending on the metal, and soap, wax or oil serve as lubricant. A live center and a spindle back-plate thread adapter are optional.
For blanks up to 47″, see the Manual metal spinning lathe D47; for programmed production runs, the D800 CNC Metal spinning lathe. Aluminum Sheet and Copper Sheet can be cut into blanks.
