About this product
Butyl tape is the sealant that goes inside a joint, between two pieces of metal, before the fasteners are driven. This listing is Tacky Tape SM5227, a highly elastic, tacky butyl tape made for metal roof panel joints and standing seam roof endlaps. Gaco now sells it under the name GacoSeal SM5227 and states the performance is unchanged.
The tack is the reason roofers reach for it: the maker states it grabs metal that still carries a light film of roll-forming oil, so you do not have to wipe every panel before taping. It also stays compressible and sticky on cold substrates, which helps on fall and winter jobs. Gaco lists it for GALVALUME, GALVALUME PLUS, ACRYLUME and ZINCALUME, Kynar 500 and siliconized polyester painted steel, aluminum, aluminized steel and PVF-coated metal.
- Temperatures: apply from -5°F to 120°F; in service from -40°F to 200°F; Gaco states it stays bonded and crack-free even at -40°F.
- Stretch: more than 1000% elongation (ASTM C908).
- Tested: meets ASTM E1680 for air infiltration and ASTM E1646 for water leakage.
Use it in the side laps and end laps of exposed fastener panels such as 1/2″ and 7/8″ corrugated or RPBR, at standing seam endlaps, and under flashings and closures. The data sheet says to place the tape on the weather side of the fasteners, and it is meant for joints that are mechanically fastened, not for wet or frosty surfaces. For exposed beads and trim joints, finish with Geocel 2300, Geocel Phantom or Adseal silicone.

Questions
Do I need to clean oily panels first?
Gaco states SM5227 adheres to metal with a light film of roll-forming oil without prewiping. Remove heavy oil, dirt, standing water, frost and snow.
Is Tacky Tape SM5227 discontinued?
No. It was renamed GacoSeal SM5227; the maker says the performance is the same.
Which side of the screws does the tape go on?
The maker's data sheet says to place it on the wet, or entry, side of the fasteners, then remove the release paper before closing and fastening the joint.
