About this product
Painted aluminum trim coil scratches easily, and a steel-jawed seamer can leave marks in the finish. The Malco S5R answers that with die-cast zinc jaws, which are softer than forged steel and gentler on paint and coatings. Siding, window and gutter installers use it to make clean bends, close hems and straighten edges on aluminum flashing, coil stock and fascia.
The jaws are 5″ wide and slightly bowed, so they clamp evenly across their full width even on thin stock. Graduations every 1/4″ mark the bend depth, up to 2″. Compound leverage gives roughly a 7 to 1 mechanical advantage, so you can hold the metal firmly without a heavy squeeze. Malco’s RedLine handles have a contoured, non-slip grip, a spring-opening action and a thumb latch for one-hand use, and the tool is nickel plated against rust.
Know its limits: Malco rates the S5R for aluminum up to .029″, and it is not warranted for striking, prying or bending heavy ferrous sheet. For galvanized or painted steel and heavier work, choose a forged-jaw seamer such as the Malco S2R, S3R or S6R. The Malco Straight Gripped Seamer Tongs are another option for painted work. Pair it with Aluminum Coil and a Van Mark brake or Trim-A-Brake II for trim jobs.
