Trim & Accessory Estimator

Enter the eave, rake, ridge and valley lengths and the panel count. The estimator lists the trim pieces, clips, screws, butyl tape and closures for the job.

Trim & accessory estimate

Used for the foam closure count.

Use the spacing in the panel maker's installation guide for your wind zone.

Estimate based on nominal thickness and the values above. Confirm with us before ordering.

The method

  • Trim pieces = each run ÷ the piece length minus the lap, rounded up for each run.
  • Clips = panels × (panel length ÷ clip spacing + 1).
  • Screws = clips × screws per clip, plus screws for trim.
  • Butyl tape = the length of every lap and trim run that needs it.
  • Closures = one per panel at each eave and ridge that needs them.

The clip spacing, laps and screws per clip come from the profile you pick. The panel maker’s figures always win, so check them on large jobs.

Worked example

A 40-foot eave trimmed in 10-foot pieces with a 3-inch lap needs 5 pieces. Thirty 18-foot panels with clips every 24 inches need 10 clips per panel, or 300 clips. At 2 screws per clip, that’s 600 clip screws.

What it doesn’t cover

  • Custom flashing at walls, chimneys and skylights. List those separately.
  • Snow guards. They need a layout from the manufacturer. See snow guards.
  • Underlayment. Use the roof area and the roll coverage on the underlayment page.
  • Gun-grade sealant for exposed joints and trim ends. Add it by job size.

Questions

Can I bend the trim myself?

Yes, from trim coil on a siding and trim brake. The estimator counts pieces, so it works either way.

What lap should I use on trim?

Follow the panel or trim maker’s detail. A wider lap uses more trim but sheds water better on low slopes.

Is clip spacing the same on every roof?

No. Wind zone, roof edges and the panel maker’s rules change it. Use their spacing.

Can I send the list to a quote?

Yes. The button under the result adds every line to your quote list.

Order the panel coil with the coil-for-a-roof calculator, or see all metal roofing calculators.
