Panels per Coil Calculator

Enter the coil weight, width and gauge, the panel length and the panel coverage. The calculator shows how many full panels the coil will run, what’s left over and the roof area covered.

The method

  1. Coil length = coil weight ÷ weight per linear foot.
  2. Full panels = coil length ÷ panel length, rounded down.
  3. Leftover = coil length − (full panels × panel length).
  4. Coverage = full panels × panel length × coverage width in feet.

Worked example

A 1,000 lb coil of 20″ × .032″ aluminum weighs about 0.75 lb per foot, so it holds about 1,335 linear feet.

  • At 18-foot panels, that’s 74 full panels with about 3 feet left over.
  • With 16-inch coverage, 74 panels cover about 1,776 square feet.

Getting more from each coil

  • Plan panel lengths before you run. Mixing long and short panels from one coil can cut the leftover.
  • Use the leftover for flashing, trim or short panels over porches and dormers.
  • Ask whether a full coil or coil cut to your total length works out cheaper for the job.
  • Check the gauge on the coil tag as well as the weight.

Coverage comes from the machine

Coverage width and the coil width it needs are set by your roll former and profile. Check the profile sheet for your machine, such as an NTM MultiPro. You can compare machines on our roll formers page.

Questions

Why round down the panels?

A partial panel isn’t a panel. The leftover is shown separately so you can plan it.

What coil weight should I enter?

Use the weight on the coil tag. For a coil you haven’t bought yet, ask us for the typical weight of that item.

Can I add the coil to my quote from here?

Yes. The button under the result adds the coil to your quote list.
